  • Notes
    • Mary (Elden) Kittendorf researched the "Wurm" and "Hoffmeyer" Family genealogy. She interviewed Katherine (Hoffmeyer) Wurm in the late 1940's when Katherine was living at a nursing home in Pigeon, Michigan, and wrote the following:

John and Katherine Hoffmeyer were living with their two children (Kate 4 and John 2) in a log cabin built in the woods east of Ubly in 1881. Though partly cleared, the land was still marked by stands of large trees. Behind their land was a large swamp, beyond which lived their closest neighbors, a young couple with five children. On Monday morning, September 5, 1881, John Wurm hitched his horses to a wagon and set off to help a neighbor harvest his fields. Meanwhile, Katherine's friend came from across the swamp to visit by jumping from log to stone, leaving her five children home alone.

The fire raged up from the south. Word of it came to John as he worked and he arrived home barely ahead of the flames. It was too late for Katherine's friend to return home and she became quite frantic. John set all of his livestock free to fend for themselves, then shut his family and the neighbor in the milkhouse. The milkhouse was a sort of storehouse and was partially underground. With the help of another neighbor, a bachelor, who joined them, John wet down the door of the milkhouse repeatedly with water from his well. Together the group waited out the fire, frightened but reasonably safe. They emerged hours later to find that they were among the lucky ones. The flames had skipped over their log cabin, leaving it standing and still intact. Most of the livestock was found alive, huddled on small patches of unburned ground and surrounded by smouldering forest. Best of all, Katherine's friend returned home to find her five children safe and unharmed also.

After John's death in 1914, Katherine sold the homestead and moved first to Bad Axe and then later to Pigeon, Michigan. She owned homes in Bad Axe at 1646 Irwin and in Pigeon at 7319 Paul before entering the nursing home in the 1940s.
