Buskerud County, Norway
Information is sought about the county of Buskerud in Norway, the homeland of many of our Norwegian ancestors. Contributions of photos or information regarding this area (both historical and present day) would be greatly appreciated.
According to Wikipedia, the county is named after the old farm Buskerud in Modum, since this was the seat of the bailiffs in old times (until 1668). The name comes from biskup meaning 'bishop'and ruð meaning 'clearing, farm'. The farm originally belonged to the bishop of Oslo.
The areas of Buskerud most relevant to our genealogical research are:
- Parish of Sigdal – where the marriage of Ola Toreson Hallerdalen and Kari Kristoffersdotter Bjørndalen took place in 1817
- Skretteberg farm, parish of Modum – residence of their son Bertil Olson Skretteberg and his wife Maren Turina Vilhelmsdotter who married in the Heggen church in 1852
- Nes, Hallingdal – birthplace of Ole Haroldson Olson in 1866
- Gubberud farm, parish of Modum – birthplace of Torvald Gulbrandsson Gubberud in 1858, son-in-law of the above Bertil Olson Skretteberg
