Obituary of William White

Passing of a Pioneer.

Mr. William White, a pioneer of the Enniskillen settlement, and who passed through Walkerton when there were only three houses in town, died at his home in Curloss on Wednesday of last week at the advanced age of 79 years. The deceased, who was born in County Down, Ireland, came to Bruce about sixty years ago, and in journeying along the Durham road passed through Hanover which had only one house and came to a hamlet triple its size, called Walkerton. After putting up for a time here he continued his journey until he reached a point in Curloss, near Enniskillen, where he hewed out a home for himself and settled down to farm. He was married about forty years ago to Miss Annie Jackson of Teeswater, who survives him with one daughter, Mrs. John Whitehead, jr., east of Walkerton, and four sons, William of Cargill and Herbert, Bert and Eldon at home. The deceased was a Conservative in politics and a Presbyterian in religion. For the past two years he had been suffering with kidney trouble and dropsy, but succumbed to pneumonia from which he had been bedfast only two days. The funeral to the Baptist cemetery on Friday afternoon was largely attended, the deceased being widely known and highly esteemed.
