Among Mannheim's first settlers were Mennonite families named Latschar, Herner, Christner, Eschleman, Bleam, Bowman, Hallman, Bergey, Hunsberger and Shantz. They came from Pennsylvania but their roots reached back to Switzerland. Swiss Mennonites and German Lutherans came to Mannheim directly from Switzerland and Germany soon after the Amish migration began, bringing the names Peppler, Boesinger, Geiger, Rickert, Bachert, Brandt, and Spaetzel.

    Early lay leaders
Deacons, ministers and bishops, usually chosen by lot from the congregation and ordained by a bishop, were not the only leaders. Layman Jacob Bergey along with George Peppler, a Lutheran, organized the first Sunday School in the community in 1870. It was a union or non-denominational Sunday School held in the schoolhouse. Not until 1874 was Sunday School allowed in the meetinghouse. The issue of Sunday School continued to be controversial and was a major factor in the 1889 split that separated the Old Order, most of whom live north and west of Waterloo, from other Mennonites.

George married Dora Trapp on 25 Nov 1866 in by Rev. Kaessmann. Dora was born on 19 Feb 1848 in Loitz, Germany; died on 18 Mar 1918 in Waterloo, Waterloo County, Ontario; was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
