Ed. Wurm Delivered Village Mail 32 Years

Mr. Edmond Daniel Wurm died on Monday at Brier Bush Hospital Stouffville, in his 84th year. For the past few years he had been living with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hastings, Markham R R 2. On Christmas Day he suffered a stroke and was taken to hospital. He had not been in good health for some time.

Mr. Wurm was born in Zurich and came to Markham in 1922. He took over the mail and express from Mr. O. Lawrie and for some years used a team of horses and dray. He bought the old livery stable on Joseph Street (now the Economist and Sun building) from the builder, Mr. Wm. Michael. He retained this, later using it for trucks which he used to haul gravel for roads, and for his mail an express truck, until after the last war when he sold it to the Veterans. When he retired after 32 years, he received a medal from the Post Office Dept. which he prized. For many years he served a bailiff.

As a young man in Zurich, Mr. Wurm was a baseball catcher with the local team, and a teammate was the late "Babe" Sebert. In later life, he continued his interest in this game, and often put the local diamond into shape. He was a keen lawn bowler and won many prizes.

After leaving the village, he often came to the local club to watch the play, although not physically able to play himself. He was a staunch and active lifelong Liberal, regardless of the party's fortunes.

Mrs. Wurm died many years ago. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Hastings, and three grandchildren.

The funeral sevice was held Wednesday afternoon at Dixon Funeral Home, with interment in Melville Cemetery.
