Kathleen Mae WURM and Thomas Edward HASTINGS

Kathleen "Kay" Mae Wurm was born on May 9, 1913 in Zurich, Ontario an only child. Her grandparents originated from Bleidenrod, Germany. The majority of her relatives outlined on this website settled in the Zurich/Crediton area of Ontario or in Michigan.

The family resided in Zurich, Ontario where Kay's father owned a livery stable. About 1922, Edmund sold the business to George Theil and the family moved to Markham. When Kay was 11 years old, her mother died.

Kay attended Markham High School and went on to graduate from the University of Guelph in 1933.

She met Tom Hastings in Markham, Ontario. They were married on Oct 6, 1936 in Markham, Ontario by Rev. Tom Mitchel, a retired minister and distant relative.

Thomas "Tom" Edward Hastings was born on Jan 16, 1900 in Markham, Ontario. His great-grandparents originated from Cavanacreagh, Tyrone, Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1818. Prior to arrival in Canada, the surname was "Hasty".

Tom's great-grandfather purchased Lot 30 and 31 of Concession 7, Markham Township from the Crown April 1, 1829. Tom was born at Lot 30 and lived here until the age of 73 when he and Kay retired and moved to lakefront in 1973.

Tom was known as a gentle and kind man and a good neighbour. He also had a love for animals and they all respected him. He never met a horse that he could not win over.

The farm is located on south-west corner of what is now known as McCowan Road and 19th Avenue in Markham Township. Tom and Kay raised three children here.

Tom Hastings died in Sherwood Township, Ontario on the 21st of May 1993 at the age of 93 years, following a lengthy illness. Kathleen died on April 29th, 2005 in Pembroke, Ontario, 10 days before her 92nd birthday.

The couple were cremated and have a headstone at Melville Cemetery on Kennedy Road in Markham, Ontario.
