(Research):THE FOLLOWING OBITUARY, FOUND IN THE JAN. 1, 1890 EDITION OF THE HERALD OF TRUTH IS THE KEY PIECE OF INFORMATION WHICH DISPROVES EZRA EBY'S ASSERTION THAT RUDOLPH'S GRANDFATHER WAS HEINRICH, SON OF GREGORIUS. THIS OBITUARY MAKES THE CASE FOR THIS RUDOLPH'S GRANDFATHER BEING RUDOLPH DETTWEILER THE SON OF MELCHIOR DETTWEILER

    Notes:

Allan Dettweiler is studying Ezra Eby's work and extending the mennonite tree at ezraeby.com. He indicates the following.

(Research): Newspaper Obituary, it is from the Canada Museum and is dated March 16, 1837. It reads as follows:
"Suicide: Last Friday afternoon, Rudolph Dettweiler gave himself such a terrible cut in the throat with a pocket knife, presumably in a fit of madness, that he died the following Sunday, despite all measures to save him, in the home of Samuel Eby (the older). He was in his 67th year. (translated from German -perhaps not perfectly).

According to Ezra Eby, the father of Rudolph is Heinrich Dettweiler[Eby 2200] . However, there are 2 reasons to doubt this information. Firstly, no records have been located in Pennsylvania which would support this, and secondly, an obituary for the son of the above Rudolph, also named Rudolph, states that his father AND GRAND-FATHER were also named Rudolph (not Heinrich). Records located in Pennsylvania show that one Melchior Dettweiler had a son and grandson, both named Rudolph. It is thought that Melchior's grandson is the same Rudolph (Canada Rudolph) who, with his wife Anna Wanner, and their family, arrived in Canada in 1810. Eby also states that Anna Dettweiler, the wife of Cornelius Pannebecker was a sister to Canada Rudolph. However the Pennsylvania records do not show that Canada Rudolph had a sister Anna. Hopefully, information will be found which will clear up this matter.
