    Notes:

Neil and Margaret had a son, Donald (Dan) born about 1841-42. The family came to Unionville, Ontario about 1842. There were already living at Unionville two families of McKinnons in which both wives were McGillivrays. Perhaps they were relatives of our McGillivrays and that’s why our family came to Unionville in Markham twp. There were Mcleans there as well. According to Ann McGillivray Poole’s obituary in the Markham paper, she came to Canada with her mother, sister and two brothers. The family would have then been as follows: Effy McGillivray (widow), Marion McGillivray, Ann McGillivray, Archibald McGillivray and Neil NcGillivray with wife Margaret (Peggy) and infant son Donald. Neil and Margaret had 5 more children born to them while they lived in Markham Twp: Mary, Hugh, Alexander, Neil and Anne.

According to Margaret McGillivray’s obituary in the Port Elgin Times, they lived in Markham Twp. about 10 years, and went to Bruce Twp. about 1854.

Neil McGillivray was killed by a tree when clearing land Oct. 20, 1855. The family story is that he bent over to pick up a button that had come off his coat, and wasn’t aware that the tree was coming down. Margaret was left with 6 children. The oldest boy, Donald, was then about 13 years old, but he was severely retarded. Margaret was fortunate to have Neil’s brother Archibald living with them and she soon married him. However, Archie died in October of 1856. Margaret was pregnant, and when the child was born he was named Neil Archibald. Her other children were Donald, Mary, Hugh, Alexander, Neil and Anne. So she had a Neil, an Archibald, and a Neil Archibald. She stayed on the farm, and raised her family. Margaret died Aug. 17, 1897, at 83 years. Neil, Archie and Margaret were buried in Queen Hill Presbyterian Cemetery which is a little over a mile north of the homestead.

Mrs. McGillivray Obituary, Port Elgin Times, Aug. 26, 1897
On Tuesday morning, Aug. 17th, there passed away on the 12th of Bruce an old and respected resident in the person of Mrs. McGillivray, mother of Neil McGillivray, Port Elgin. She was a native of Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland and came to Canada with the husband about 55 years ago. After living in Markham, York Co., about 10 years, they came to Bruce Twp. about 1854, and settled on the farm on which she died now owned buy Mr. Hugh McGillivray. Fully 42 years ago Mrs. McGillivray's husband was killed by a falling tree and she was left a widow to struggle with the world as best she might and with a family of eight children none of them able to do for themselves. She was a woman of strong faith, good sense, and unceasing industry and she had the satisfaction of seeing her family grow up about her, all doing well a credit to themselves and to her. She was a humbler follower of Christ, always anxious to do his will as she understood it. The funeral took place on Wednesday of last week to the townline cemetery, and the remains were laid alongside those of her husband who had gone so long before. She was a devoted Presbyterian and her pastor, Rev. H. McQuarrie, conducted appropriate services at the funeral.
