SEWARD PETERSON FUNERAL IS HELD MONDAY

Outstanding Hope Township Pioneer Passes Away at Home September 2.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Vang Free Lutheran church for Seward Peterson, prominent pioneer resident of Hope township, who passed away Saturday morning, September 2, 1944, at his home.

The early day community leader had been in failing health for about eight years and was critically ill for several days before death came.

The services were in charge of Rev. A. C. Hanson of Minneapolis at the home and at the church. Pall-bearers who carried the remains to the grave in the Vang cemetery were Edwin, Lawrence, Lester and Leonard Peterson, Ole K. Olson and Ernest Olson.

Seward, son of Olaf and Karen Peterson, was born February 11, 1863, in Norway. He emigrated with his parents in 1870. The family stopped for a short time in Manitoba and settled at Pembina, where they lived for 12 years before they moved to Mountain to make their home for five more years before they homesteaded in Hope township in 1887.

He was married March 28, 1888, to Anna Olson, another Hope township pioneer and they have made their home continuously in the same community.

Eight children survive with their mother. They are Mrs. Oscar Braaten of Abbey, Sask., who came to attend the funeral, Mrs. D. J. Taylor of Toronto, Ont., Mrs. N. S. Thompson of Abbey, Sask., Mrs. Dave Johnson of Shackleton, Sask., Mrs. Palmer Soli of Langdon, Herman and Alvin Peterson of Vang and Alfred Peterson of Langdon.

Three sisters and four brothers also survive. They are Mrs. Sam Braaten of California, Mrs. S. Quallie of Brinsmade, Mrs. A. Curry of Saskatchewan, Peter Peterson of Windom, Minn., Ole Peterson of the Homen vicinity and Fred and Charles of Vang. Thirty-three grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive.

In the earliest years, Mr. Peterson was widely known as an outstanding community builder. Besides his own farming operations he always found time to be of help to his neighbors and community. As a very capable butcher, for many years he did practically all of the farm butchering in the community. His brother Adolph, since deceased, and he were among the earliest custom threshers. Mr. Peterson was considered one of the best steam engineers in the area and was issued a state engineer's license for 26 seasons. He operated a lumber mill on the Big Pembina river for a number of years and served often as an auctioneer.

Despite his countless activities, he found time for a wild life hobby and through it became an outstanding authority on wild game animals and birds.

Always civic minded, he served his township in practically every official capacity. As a pioneer justice of the peace for 24 years, he presided at countless hearings and justice court trails. He served on the district school board for 30 years and as a township supervisor for nine years.

Testifying to his civic service and the high regard in which he was held, the Hope township board this week issued the following statement. "We take this means to express our sincere regrets upon the passing of our esteemed and faithful friend, Seward Peterson, who served so many years on the Hope school and township boards. We extend our sympathy to Mrs. Peterson and her family." The statement was signed by all of the board members, including Oscar Mostad, chairman, Robert Thompson, Morris Torgerson and Martin Danielson, clerk."

PIONEER VANG WOMAN DIES SUNDAY

Last Rites Held at Vang Wednesday For Mrs. Seward Peterson

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for one of the earliest pioneer mothers of the Vang vicinity. She was Mrs. Seward Peterson, who passed away Sunday morning, July 28, 1946, at a Langdon hospital where she had been a patient for about four months. She had been bed-ridden by heart trouble and complications for the past year.

Family services were held at the Belzer & Brooks funeral home in Langdon and after that at Vang. Interment was in the Vang cemetery.

Anna, daughter of Ole and Marie Olson, was born May 28, 1863, at Tromso, Norway. She was reared in that country and in 1882 was married to Rasmus Lee. The young couple immigrated to the United States and came to Fargo the same year, in 1882. They stayed at Fargo for about two years and then went to Seattle, seeking a climate more favorable to Mr. Lee's health. After about a year there they returned to North Dakota and homesteaded in the Vang vicinity, on the farm where she made her home during the rest of her life, in recent years with her son Herman.

Mr. Lee passed away in 1887. The three children born to that union have also passed away. Mrs. Lee was married to Seward Peterson March 28, 1888 at Vang. Mr. Peterson died September 2, 1944.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Peterson and eight survive their parents. They are Mrs. Oscar Braaten of Abbey, Sask., Mrs. D. J. Taylor of Toronto, Ont., Mrs. N. S. Thompson of Abbey, Sask., Mrs. Dave Johnstone of Shackleton, Sask., Mrs. Palmer Soli of Langdon, Herman and Alfred Peterson of Langdon. * Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Johnstone arrived July 20 to be with their mother during her last illness.

Ole E. Olson, Mrs. T. K. Moen and Mrs. P. O. Larson, all of the Vang vicinity, are a brother and two sisters who survive.

The family is affiliated with the Vang Baptist church and Mrs. Peterson was long active in the work of the church and its ladies aid.

One of the pioneers and early settlers of Hope township in Cavalier County, North Dakota, passed away to the unknown beyond on November 12, 1924. Olaf Peterson was born at Hallan (sic), Norway, September 7, 1833 and was at his death 91 years, 2 months and 5 days old.

He immigrated to America in the year 1869 and first settled at Selkirk, Manitoba, living there for one and one half years.

He then moved to Pembina county, close to Pembina city. There he helped to take in all the hardships of the early settlers, which were at times mostly unreasonable, but Mr. Peterson was one of the boys and never grumbled or worried over hardships. About 36 years ago, he moved from Pembina to what was afterwards called Hope township in Cavalier County, N. D. where he had made his home with his family, except three years that he lived at Spalding, Sask., Canada, where he proved up a homestead.

Mr. Peterson was a continuous resident here since 1914. He had lived in Hope township with his (son) Charley. Mrs. Olaf Peterson (Caroline) died eight years ago, February 4, 1916, and was 74 years old. To them were born the following children, all of whom are well and favorably known in Hope township and Cavalier county: Seward Peterson, Adolph Peterson of Vang; Mrs. Ole H. Olson of Vang; Mrs. Sarah Quale, Brinsmade, N.D.; Mrs. Ida Curry, Star City, (Manitoba: sic) Sask.; Pete Peterson of Vang; Mrs. Sam Braaten, Vang; Fred Peterson, Vang; Ole Peterson and Charlie Peterson, Vang.

Olaf Petersons were grandparents to 66 children and great-grandparents to 42. Olaf Peterson as a neighbor could not be excelled and it can honestly be said about the children that they have been an honor to their parents and also to our community.

Mr. Peterson will be greatly missed by all his friends for his jolly stories and his native (narratives?) of early days and pioneer settlers.

Interment took place November 18 at the Vang cemetery.
