  1. 1.  Charles Shoemaker was born in 1863 (son of Schumacher); died on 14 Sep 1905; was buried in St Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Zurich, Hay Township, Huron County, Ontario.

    Notes:

Charles Shoemaker was a hotelkeeper. He had a hotel in Blyth (he also had a hotel in Zurich), sold it and bought the hotel in Parkhill. He hadn't been in Parkhill long when he died of typhoid fever. Following the death of Charles, his widow's brother and sister-in-law, John Schafer and Louisa Kraft, came to Parkhill. John ran the hotel for his sister after her husband's death and may have acquired ownership. Charles Schumacher's brother, Louis married Amanda/Semenda Kraft, Louisa's sister.

    Parkhill Gazette-Review September 28, 1905

"Mr C Shoemaker, proprietor of the Powell House died on Thursday 14th inst in his 43rd year. He was confined to bed for several weeks with typhoid and pneumonia and although in his day a large strong man medical attendance and nursing were of no avail. The funeral was held on the following Saturday. After a service at the house the remains were taken to Zurich for internment in the Lutheran Cemetery. He sold that property in Jan 1901 and purchased the Dominion Hotel property in Zurich from Mr C Greb. For a number of years he managed that hostelery and then sold it two years ago having purchased the Powell House in Parkhill. He is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters and by a number of brothers and sisters." (Note dates for hotel ownership conflict with other sources.)
