Janet Hastings was raised on her father’s homestead and educated in the village of Lemonville.
She moved with the family to Norland in 1874 where she met and married Hugh Alexander McLaughlin who operated a general store in Norland. On his very early death – 27 years of age – it is said she vowed never to marry again.
After his death, from 1884 to 1905 she kept a home for her brother-in-law Robert James McLaughlin, a young fledgling barrister in Lindsay. He would later become a leading Ontario barrister with an established Toronto practice. She went to Cupar, Saskatchewan in 1905 to keep house for her son John Adam, and her brother Adam Luther, both businessmen in the town of Cupar.
Returning to Toronto in 1911, she lived the remainder of her life either with her sister Mary Ann or her brother-in-law Robert James McLaughlin in Toronto or with her daughter Marion in Toronto and Vancouver. Her son-in-law William McElhanney, a prominent Vancouver engineer and surveyor provided for her care until her death in 1955. She kept her vow of 1884.
