First Settlers' Descendants Hold Wedding Anniversary

Kitchener, Feb 2 - Two direct descendants of Waterloo County's earliest settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Moses Betzner, to-day celebrated the 67th anniversay of their wedding quietly at their home at 11 Fairview Avenue. Mr. Betzner, who will celebrate his 93rd birthday on Feb. 18 was born on the old Betzner homestead, the first farm settled in Waterloo County, now the site of the historical society memorial to the county's pioneers, his grandfather being the original settler. Mrs. Betzner will be 87 years old on May 16. Her maiden name was Veronica Brubacher and she was descended directly from Joseph Sherk, the partner of her husband's grandfather in his pioneering efforts. Incidentally it was the grandparents to this couple who were chosen as the heroes of B. Mabel Dunham's novel of Waterloo County pioneer life, "The Trail of the Conestogo."

In 1906 J.W. Hutchison arrived and built a 2 1/2 storey house and store on his farm northeast of Spalding's present location. When Mr. Hutchison was appointed Postmaster, he named the Post Office after the birthplace of his wife, the former Pattie T. Hall of Spalding, England. During the next fourteen years an inland hamlet developed around the post office, and eventually old Spalding could boast of a bank, doctor, cafe, blacksmith, butcher and telephone. It became the meeting place for the LacVert, Naicam and Spalding areas.

Mr. Hutchison's store, built in 1906, was abandoned and replaced by a new building on the new site. Son, J.W. Hutchison Jr. was in charge of the store until his death in 1973.
Hutchison, Joseph William "J. W." (I01480)
