DR. DONALD HASTINGS
Dr. Donald James Hastings, aged 79 years, beloved husband of Isobel Mary Hastings, passed away on July 9, 1994 at the Grace Hospital.
The entire community mourns the untimely loss of Dr. Donald Hastings, pillar of Winnipeg society. Dr. Hastings was born in Calgary on May 2, 1915, to proud parents, Dr. Howard E. Hastings and the former Amy Ethel Timmins, both of whom hailed from Midland, Ont. ?Don?, as he was known to his circle of intimates, moved to lucky Winnipeg in 1916. He soon joined a local ornithology group; in a testament to his abiding charm, he continues to keep many birds as his friends. Don was graduated from Gordon Bell High School with flying colors, of course, in 1933 under the watchful eye of O.V Jewitt.
Don chose the profession of healer and enjoyed a meteoric career in medical school, graduating from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1941 with his M.D. and L.D.C.C. After an internship at Winnipeg General Hospital, Don spent a post-graduate year at St. Boniface General Hospital, completing his brilliant course of study in 1942.
The orange blossoms came for Don in 1942, when he married the beauteous Isobel Mary Carver at Holy Trinity Church. It was an eventful time for Don and his blushing bride. He served in the RCAMC as captain from 1942 to 1945; he served overseas in England and Italy. In 1945 he took over his late father?s practice, and secured the assistance of his loyal and continuing secretary Nora B. Lewis. His respected practice began in Somerset Block, later moving to the Medical Arts Building.
Don attained respected achievements in the medical field. His stirring leadership was instrumental in developing the department of general practice at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg. He became a charter member of the distinguished College of Family Practice of Canada, Vancouver, in 1954, and was President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (1964-1965). Not only did Don lead an active professional life, he also experienced some exciting personal moments ? for instance, the flood on Maplewood Ave. in 1950.
The indomitable Don was slowed down, nothing more, by a heart attack in 1970. He continued a scaled-back practice of diehard patients and also did locums for other doctors when they were away.
Finally realizing that fun was more fun than work, Don decided to devote more time to his memberships in the Niakwa and Charleswood Golf Clubs, the Beaver Masonic Lodge No. 139 A.F. and A.M. Don was a bridge aficionado and continued to play with all who would let him. In addition, he curled at Granite and Charleswood, and Civic Caledonian Clubs. He was a non-smoker since 1970, and a swimmer, runner, and Pritiken Diet follower since 1971.
Don and Isobel celebrated their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary September 12, 1992.
Surviving, besides his loving wife Isobel, are two sons, [....]; three grandchildren, [....]; his sisters, Margaret Hawthorne of Vancouver and Connie Rymes of Calgary; one brother Jack and his wife Vina; as well as many nieces and nephews.
