Notes |
- From the research of Earl Hastings
Mary Anne Hastings was raised on her father's homestead in Whitchurch Township, York County, near Lemonville, Ontario.
In about 1850 she married John McDowell and they established themselves in Proton Township, Grey County near Dundalk, Ontario. John McDowell was one of the first settlers in the township in 1849 when he located on Lot 1, Concession 21. He subsequently became owner of a saw and grist mill; a stave and shingle factory in Dundalk and 150 acres of land, namely, Lots 229 and 230, Concession 1, W.T. and S.R. and Lot 237, Concession 4, W.T. and S.R. He was a member of the Township Council for 3 years and was a Justice of the Peace for 17 years.
Mary Anne Hastings McDowell died in 1868 as the result of childbirth complication. The place of burial of her and her husband is unknown, but quite probably Dundalk.
The original McDowell home constructed by John McDowell in Dundalk is located at 430 Main Street East. There is a subdivision of Dundalk named McDowell subdivision and a McDowell Street in the subdivision.
