Former Resident of Vang Dies in California
Committal services were held April 9 at the Vang Cemetery for Mrs. Sam Braaten, 84, who died April 2, 1962, at Oxnard, California, where she had been making her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moore. Mrs. Braaten is a former Waterloo and Vang resident, her husband having been one of the early day mail carriers on the Langdon route for many years.
Kenneth Olson of Fargo officiated at the Graveside services, and interment was beside her husband in the family plot. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Emil Olson, Lester and Alvin Peterson, Mil Peterson, Langdon; Leonard Peterson, Grand Forks; and Ole Peterson, Minnewaukan. Her two daughters, Mrs. Judith Jacokwitz and Mrs. Ruth Shearer, came from Minneapolis to attend the services. Other survivors were Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Jacokwitz, and Mrs. Shearer, and another daughter, Mrs. Herman Braget of Los Angeles, and four sons, Gordon Braaten, Chicago; Myron and Cyrus in California; and Grant Braaten, Walhalla. Also surviving are a brother, Charles Peterson, Vang; and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Quale, Brinsmade. Mr. Braaten, a son, and three brothers predeceased her.
