Mary Anne Hastings was raised on her father's homestead in Whitchurch Township, York County, near Lemonville, Ontario.
In about 1850 she married John McDowell and they established themselves in Proton Township, Grey County near Dundalk, Ontario. John McDowell was one of the first settlers in the township in 1849 when he located on Lot 1, Concession 21. He subsequently became owner of a saw and grist mill; a stave and shingle factory in Dundalk and 150 acres of land, namely, Lots 229 and 230, Concession 1, W.T. and S.R. and Lot 237, Concession 4, W.T. and S.R.
