      Sime Family History
      Written by Mrs. Harold Sime

Thomas Sime born in Scotland in 1817 and his wife Jane Moir born in Scotland in 1814 immigrated to Canada. His trade was stone masonry. I have not yet established for sure where they came from in Scotland. Some say from near the Firth of Forth.

The Sime families belonged to the Fraser Clan in Scotland and the Moirs to the Gordon Clan, According the History books the name Sime originated from the name Simon Fraser and there are many different ways of spelling. My own name was Emily Darling Fraser and I married Harold Sime. My grandparents also immigrated to Canada, also my great grandparents about the same time as the Simes. They came from Dunkeld, Scotland and worked at stone masonry also. They settled in Proton Township in 1860

I don't know the exact date the Simes arrived in Canada but according to family records the eldest son Peter was born in Montreal in 1845. Thomas born in 1846. John in 1849 and Robert born in Montreal August 16, 1851. They came to East Luther Township, Dufferin County in 1854 and settled on Lot 25 Concession One. They had four other children, George who died from an accident in 1912. Mary born in 1857, Jane 1868 and William 1860. They were all pioneer farmers in East Luther except William who settled in Amaranth Township. Peter later to Melancthon

For more information on the history of East Luther refer to "100 years along the Grand" by Esther Graham who has been of great assistance in compiling this family tree. Also the story of Dufferin - Into the High County by Adelaide Leitch. For the history of Amaranth "The roots of Amaranth" by Elizabeth Anne Keeling, although it does not mention the Wm. Sime Family, it tells of the neighborhood, and how the pioneers lived. The Wm. Sime family attended Blacks Corners Presbyterian Church and Wm. was a trustee when Amaranth College was built. He also had a share in the Edgar telephone line.
