Notes |
- From Ezra Eby Book
Abraham D. Shoemaker, "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, February 16th, 1809. In May, 1829, he came to Canada with his grandfather, Jacob Shoemaker, George Bechtel and family, and his brother John's widow, old "Maricha," and her three youngest children, Magdalena, Veronica, and David. On April 15th, 1834, he was married to Mary Miller who was born November 20th, 1814, and died September 11th, 1874. He died January 13th, 1888. Some time after their marriage he moved on the farm now occupied by his son, David M., where he constructed a dam and erected sawmills. An extensive business in lumber was carried on at these mills for a number of years. Recently the Berlin Water Works Company purchased the water privilege together with several acres of land. This caused the removal of the sawmills. Here he had a family of nine children.
