Pioneer - SHEWAN, John
Biographical Sketches of
Early Settlers of Wellington County
SHEWAN, John (d.), was b. Aberdeenshire, Scot. 1847. When thirteen years of age, he was induced to come to Canada by his uncle, the late James Chalmers, who gave him employment until he could better his position. He continued in the employ of others, and while the wages were low at this time, young Shewan, by being very frugal, found himself, at the age of twenty-four, financially able to carry out his long cherished desire of owning a farm of his own. In 1871, he m. Mary J. Bent, dau of William Bent, the old pioneer, who was b. in Eng. in 1819, emigrated to Canada in 1831, set. in Pilkington, 1850, and set. in Minto, in 1858. He was a mason and contractor, and built some of the principal buildings in Harriston and Palmerston. He d. in Palmerston in 1899. John Shewan and his young wife started life on his new purchase, lot 24, con. 2, and here lived until they became possessed of lot 3, con. 22, where they lived at the time of John Shewan's death, in 1903. Mr. Shewan was a man of great personal activity, and left a nice property. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, in politics a Liberal, and a man of the strictest integrity, enjoying the confidence and respect of all who knew him. Issue: John who owns and works lot 24, con. 2; Charles, owns and works lot 22, con. 3; William, James, an inventor; Robert, ranches in the N.-W.; Levi, electrical expert, Niagara Falls; Annie, and Mary, at home.
