      THIEL - Andrew and Katie

      Andrew Thiel (1860-1953), the sone of George and Catherine (Wurm) Thiel, was born in Zurich, the great grandfather of many residents of the area. Andrew married Katie (Katharina) Price in 1881. Katie (1864) was a leap year child.

      Andrew was a teamster engaged by the Williams Brothers Mill (located where the Zurich fire hall and P.U.C. office stand today). Two trips per day to Hensall, for the salary of $1, helped Andrew raise his family. After Andrew's wife, Katie, died in 1942, he lived with his son, George and daughter-in-law, Ellen.

      Great-Grandpa Andrew was a kind, tall gentleman with a large moustache. Living with his family was a most amicable arrangement. Andrew could neither read nor write, but he spent many hours in the office of Thiel's Transport on Victoria Street, behind George's Goshen Street home, answering the phone and remembering the messages.

      Andrew and Katharina's children, all born in Zurich, were: William (1883-1970), who married Anna Olivia Weseloh; Jacob George (1885-1963), who married Ellen Mary Prang; Elmore John (1888-1966), who married Agnes Amelia Koch; Milca Margaret Amelia (1896-1979), who married Henry Clausius and Margarethe (Maggie) (1903-1984), who married Dorson Saunders.

      William's children, all born in the Zurich area, were: Edward, Verlyn, Gertrude and Martha. Elmore's family, also born in Zurich area, were: Harold, Carl, Bernice and Milford. Milca's children, also born in this area, were: Harvey, Albert, Leila, Clifford, Helma, and Hugh. Margaret's children, eleven in number, were born in the Stratford area.
