Jonathan Lister came from England by way of New York, and settled on lot 32, con. 1, in north-west corner of Eramosa Twp., in the 1820's. They named their property "Beech Lane Farm". It was later owned by his grandson, James L. Benham, followed by great-grandson, Lister Benham.
Jonathan Lister had two brothers, John and Isaac Lister who settled in the Rockwood area in 1843. These mens were sons of Joseph Lister of Yorkshire, England, whose brother, James Lister was the grandfather of Lord Joseph Lister, 1827-1912, the noted British Physician and Father of Antiseptic Surgery.
Jonathan Lister had seven children. The youngest, Susan, Mrs. Coulson of Owen Sound, and her husband operated a chain of hotels and a Stage Coach Line on the Garafraxa Road from Hamilton to Owen Sound.
