Notes |
- Markham Berczy Settlers pg. 13-14
PHILIPP ECKARDT (b. 23 Jul 1759, d. 25 May 1845, bur. Bethesda Lutheran Cem.) sailed on the "Catharina" as a bachelor. Philipp was one of the Settlers tried for "rioting" at Canandaigua on 6 Nov 1793. He was shown as 40 years of age in the 1804 census, his wife Ann Elizabeth (nee Koepke) (b. 16 Aug 1778, d. 11 Sep 1849, bur. Bethesda Lutheran Cem.) was 24. Berczy listed him as a member of the warehouse staff at York in 1794, and one of those working on clearing the Rouge River in February, 1795. He provided a burial shirt for Michael Hauser's funeral and it was returned on 17 Apr 1795. Philipp drew Lot 7, Conc. 6, receiving his patent in 1808. He was a leader among the Berczy Settlers and one of those sued by Berczy to collect back debts when Berczy himself was in financial difficulties. In later years Philipp became quite wealthy as a lumber and cattle dealer. The Eckardt family played a major role in the early development of Markham and Unionville and descendants still live in the area. A building that is used as the logo for the MBSA, and of great historical interest is the old Eckardt house beside the Lutheran cemetery north of Unionville.
