It has not been determined with 100% certainty that this is the same individual as Matilda Jane Thompson who married Thomas Edward Hastings. Matilda's death record gives her birth place as Pine Grove, Vaughan. An historical account from the city of Vaughan indicates that Scottish Thomson's settled in this area and that James Thomson built three mills in the area of Vaughan Mills. The 1851 census lists a Matilda Thompson of correct age residing with parents Thomas and Martha Thompson and siblings in Vaughan, York County, Ontario. Father's occupation in 1851 was Lumber Merchant. Our Matilda (Thompson) Hastings named her first born Martha which is the given name of this Matilda's mother.
