| Baptism record of Kari Kristoffersdotter The baptism record for Kari Kristoffersdotter is the first one at the top on the left hand side of the page. This far left column that she is listed in is for the parish of Sigdal.
It begins with "eod. die" which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "eodem die", meaning "on the same day" [as the baptism listed in the entry above it]. Therefore looking at the baptism entry on the previous page, under the Sigdal column, it is known that Kari Kristoffersdotter was baptized on "Dom. 4 p. Trinit." which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "Dominica 4 Post Trinitas" meaning "the 4th Sunday after Trinity Sunday". Looking this up on the history calender, this would make the baptismal date of June 23, 1793 (which the pastor has written there).
On June 23, 1793, (in Sigdal parish) "baptised was" Kristoffer Kjetilsson Bjørndalen "female child" Karen (the pastor has written Karen, the Danish form, whereas Kari is the Norwegian form and we know from other records that she went by the name of Kari. Both names of Karen and Kari are from the name "Katherine").
Next is written "Test" which is an abbreviation of "Testamentes", which is Latin for "Witnesses" or "Godparents" and they are listed as Sigrid Bjørndalen, Karen (Kari) Nilsdotter Bjørndalen, Ola Bjørndalen, Kristoffer Tovsrud and Kjetil Gren.
And after the witnesses, it is written "Introd." (short for "introduceret") the 27 July, (1793). Up until the mid-1700’s, women who had given birth were required to stay away from church for approximately six weeks after the childbirth because they were considered unclean. At the end of this time period they would be formally introduceret (introduced) to the congregation by the priest who would meet the mother at the church door and escort her into the church. This introduction, or inngang (entry) as it was also referred to, was noted in the parish register as introduceret or inngang. While the custom formally ended in the mid-1700’s, the practice continued informally well into the 1800’s, and in some places into the early part of this century.
So this date of July 27 was when Kari`s mother was introduced back into the congregation. Unfortunately this record does not list Kari`s mother`s name. |
| Marriage record of Ola Toreson Hallerdalen and Kari Kristoffersdotter Bjørndalen The marriage record states that bachelor Ola Toreson Hallerdalen (under his name appears to be the word "Tenestdreng" = male servant or hired man) age 32 years married in the parish of Sigdal, County of Buskerud on March 29, 1817 to maiden (never married before) Kari Kristoffersdotter Bjørndalen (priest has written her first name as Mari) and under her name (appears to be the word "Tenestpike" = female servant or hired girl) age 24 years.
The bestmen (witnesses) were "Sergeant" (as in military man) Dal (his last or farm name) and Kjetil Andersson Bjørndalen.
The record also states that the marriage took place in the church. The only church known to exist in Sigdal parish at that time can be viewed at this link. |
| Death record of Kari Kristoffersdotter The record states that Kari Kristoffersdotter, widow of Ola Toreson Tingelstadeie, died on December 24, 1860 and was buried on January 9, 1861 in the Nykirke church graveyard in Modum parish. Her age was 69 years and her residence was on the Tingelstad farm, but it states she died on Holo østre ("østre" meaning 'eastern' part of the Holo farm). Cause of death is not listed. Kari's oldest child, Tore Olson, was residing on Holo østre and it is assumed that Kari was at his home when she died.

| 1801 census listing of Biørndalen Farm in Sigdal Parish, Buskerud County, Norway Reidar Kjetilsson is mentioned in the Sigdal bygdebok under the Haslebråtan(Bjørndalen) farm on page 100, states he was a mine worker.
He is listed in the 1801 census, along with his brother Kristoffer and mother Ingebjørg, on the Bjørndalen farm in Sigdal parish). Reidar Kjetilsson is listed as entry #60 at the bottom, and his household position was a renter, lodger on a farm, age 44, a bachelor and a mine worker. Documentation recording Reidar after 1801 has not been located. It is not known if he married or moved out of the parish, etc.
Ingebor Larsdotter is listed as entry #38. Her household position is listed as "innerst" which mean renter or lodger on a farm. Her marital status is widowed for the first time. Her occupation is listed as living off of charity or alms. Her age of 76 is consistent with her birth year of 1725.
This record also lists the family of Kristoffer Kjetilsson living on the Bjørndalen farm in Sigdal parish of Buskerud County in 1801 as follows:
-Kristoffer Kjetilsson "husband", age 53, married the 2nd time, his occupation was "tenant farmer/cotter, farming, and he was also a mine worker"
-Marit Larsdotter "wife", age 44, married the 1st time

-Helge Kristoffersson "son", age 20,single, his occupation was "a tailor"
-Lars Kristoffersson "son", age 11
-Nils Kristoffersson "son", age 1
-Kari Kristoffersdotter "daughter", age 8
-Ingeborg Kristoffersdotter "daughter", age 5
The mother of the youngest four children was Marit Larsdotter. A review of church records suggests that no further children were born to Kristoffer Kjetilsson Bjørndalen and Marit Larsdotter. |
