Like his father, John Wurm was a farmer. In the 1890's he built the large farmhouse that currently sits abandoned on the Wurm farm, on the south side of Purdy Road 1/4 east of M-19.

From his Obituary in the Port Huron Times Herald: "John Wurm was of sturdy German descent, and his sterling character and strict integrity were stamped upon his every transaction with his fellow men. He will be sadly missed not only by the splendid family which he has raised and trained to a useful manhood and womanhood, but by the communities where he has been widely known and generally respected."

Dr. Wurm Not a Candidate, He Says

Dr. J. E. Wurm, whose candidacy for state senator from this district was tentatively announced several weeks ago, has definitely withdrawn from the race. Besides supervising the extensive business of the automobile firm of J. E. Wurm and Co. and the Scenic Oil Co., he owns and personally looks after several farms and the press of his diversified business has prompted him in announcing his withdrawal.

Dr. Wurm is quoted in the Sebewaing Blade as saying: "Never having personally made an announcement of my candidacy, I feel I will not be displeasing my many friends who had urged me to become a candidate, to all of whom I am grateful for their interest in urging me to consent to run. But I have taken on new responsibilities recently, which demand my personal attention, and which, together with my business interests in general, would suffer were I to enter the primary campaign. So I am out of it for good."

Dr. Wurm's withdrawal up to the present time, leaves Samuel H. Pangburn, Verona township farmer and chairman of the Huron County Republican committee, alone in the field for the office.

Oak Bluff Breezes
Grief and sorrow have again come to Oak Bluff this week, this time in the sudden and unexpected death of Dr. J. E. Wurm, one of our best known and respected members. This is the second such loss we have had during the past year, Dr. M.M. Wickware having passed away late last fall. Both men were self educated and self made, having reached their places of responsibility and respect through their own efforts and abilities, and their passing has dealt the association a serious blow, from which it will not soon recover. Both men will be greatly missed.

Dr. Wurm was a former director and secretary of the Cass City Summer Home club for several years, having been a member of the club since 1935. This past season he remodelled his cottage into a permanent home and with Mrs. Wurm spent the entire winter here. It was his desire and plan to retire from business and spend more time here but war and national problems had prevented this and he was active and vigorous up almost to the time of his death last Thursday.

Dr. Wurm was born and reared on a farm near Ubly, spent several winters of his early manhood in the lumbering business in northern Michigan and about the turn of the century decided to enter the University of Toronto. [Error - see note below.] He graduated from the university in 1902 in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery and practiced his profession in Elkton and Pigeon until 1924. In that year he entered the automobile business in Pigeon, later selling his Ford franchise and taking over the General Motors agency in Sebewaing and Unionville. Both of these ventures were very successful financially and in 1936 he dipsosed of the automobile business to become manager of the Sebewaing Brewing Co., a position which he did not seek and which was thrust upon him. Like all his efforts, he lifted this concern from a bad financial condition to a prosperous and going business. About three years ago he was elected a director of the Farmers’ and Merchants’ State Bank of Sebewaing and later was chosen its president. He has always been active in all civic affairs in whatever town he has been located, was an active member of Rotary and past president of the Sebewaing chapter, a member of the Masonic order, and a former director of the Michigan Tourists association. He was widely and favorably known throughout the state, especially the Upper Thumb section and he will be greatly missed by a host of friends, particularly those here at Oak Bluff who knew him best.

NOTE: University of Guelph Alumni Affairs confirms that Dr. John E. Wurm actually graduated from the University of Guelph, not the University of Toronto, in 1902. At the time of his registration at U of G, John's residence was listed as Ubley, Michigan.

Mrs Lavina E Sterner, 79, of 46550 West 11 Mile road, Novi, died Sunday, February 23 at St Mary Hospital in Livonia. She had been ill for the past six months.

Born March 9, 1885 in Ubley, Michigan, she was the daughter of Daniel and Maria (Peter) Wurm. Her husband, Fred E Sterner, survives her.

Among other affiliations, Mrs Sterner was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church of Northville, the Lutheran Ladies Auxiliary, Branch No. 2 of Detroit, was Sunday School librarian at St Paul's, and was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of St Paul's. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs Ethel Leighton of Port Clinton, Ohio; four sons, Wilfred of Novi, [...] of Bloomfield Hills, [...] of Northville and [...] of Chicago Heights.; a brother, William Wurm of Detroit,; and five grandchildren, [...].

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday, February 27) at St Paul's Lutheran Church beginning at 2 pm, with the Rev. BJ Pankow, pastor of St Paul's officiating.

Visitation will continue until today at 11 am at Casterline Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Detroit.
