Fort Chadbourne Enlisted Barracks
The building on the right has been restored. When Daniel was stationed there, he, and up to 49 other troopers slept in the building. The ruins on the left are what was left of the barracks before restoration (think before and after). The officer quarters were on the other side of the parade ground. The fort commander had a stand-alone 3 room house. The post doctor and junior officers shared a duplex like building adjacent to the commander’s house. The Butterfield Mail stop manager slept in a separate building that a served as the stage stop, tack room and his quarters. Cooking and toilet facilities were exterior to the sleeping quarters for everyone.
Notice the grass is relatively green because the area had flooding rains a week or so prior to our arrival. The arial photo of the parade grounds is more typical (brown) for most of the year.
